Sustainability policy: security

Ensuring the safety and security of passengers, our employees and partners is critical to the success of our business.

This includes controlling the UK border against organised serious crime such as illegal immigration and smuggling and protecting staff and passengers from injury and theft.

We work closely with Government agencies and other organisations at Heathrow to identify and manage security across the airport.

We continue to enhance the technical capabilities of our security systems and recently introduced additional explosives detection facilities, followed by imaging technology, ie security body scanners.

Whilst we believe this to be a necessary response to the security risks associated with a major international airport, we also recognise the privacy and personal safety concerns that passengers might have. For these reasons we implemented measures to ensure the privacy of persons being scanned and to provide passengers with clear information and assurance.

Our own security employees are trained to a level which exceeds the levels mandated by Government. Last year, we completed conflict management training for over 4,000 staff.

Our strategy

We manage security at Heathrow through the following objectives, goals and actions:

1. Integrate the efforts of all security stakeholders to mitigate the security risks facing Heathrow

Key actions

  1. Work with Government agencies on mitigating the risks from the 'Insider Threat'
  2. Continue to coordinate multi-agency Security Executive Group and Risk Assessment Group.

2. Adapt our security arrangements to meet increasing demand and changing threat

Key actions

  1. Align security policy and standards with new EU aviation security regulations.

3. Improve the passenger experience and increase productivity

Key actions

  1. Identify best practice at other key airports and implement programme to improve passenger experience through security.
