Mark – Airport Duty Manager

Mark, Airport Duty Manager

“I’ve worked at Heathrow for 16 years in a number of roles. Security Officer, Security Supervisor, Customer Service Duty Manager, Security Duty Manager, Terminal Duty Manager and now as Airport Duty Manager. With so many different departments within one organisation, your career path has a multitude of options.

“I’m part of a team that keeps this airport running 24/7.

“Heathrow never sleeps and is always bustling with activity, even out of normal operating hours, between 23.00 and 04.30 there’s all the essential stuff going on like cleaning, installing new equipment, construction and maintenance.

“It really is like a city within a city and the place is infectious. We’ll have three conference calls a day involving security, baggage and airfield teams so everyone is aware of what to expect and what issues they may need to deal with.

“It’s been likened to being a conductor of an orchestra. And we’ve always got to be ready to lead the airport response to emergency situations and incidents, orchestrating the duty teams, emergency services and other agencies to minimise impact and ensure swift business recovery.

“I admit I’m hooked on the buzz. I couldn’t imagine working in any industry other than an airport, especially Heathrow.”
