Heathrow isn’t just important to the national economy. As the UK’s largest single site employer, we’re at the heart of the local community too. Almost half of the people employed at Heathrow live nearby.
We encourage companies operating at the airport to recruit local people and help them gain valuable qualifications. We work with local schools to raise awareness about airport careers, and provide access to career-building apprenticeships and in-house academies. We support award-winning programmes to help unemployed local people back on their feet through opportunities at Heathrow.
We take our responsibilities to the environment and sustainability very seriously, always listening to the concerns of local people and doing everything possible to reduce Heathrow’s environmental impact.
In short, there is a strong and deeply rooted relationship between Heathrow and the five boroughs that make up our local community.
That’s why 1,000 local volunteers stepped forward to help us welcome the world to the 2012 Games. Many of them enjoyed the Heathrow experience so much, they have returned to provide a warm Heathrow welcome at busy times.
