Waste

Our waste strategy (2003-2007) was updated in 2007 to incorporate recent changes in the waste industry and new technologies developed over the past four years. It outlines strategies to minimise the costs and environmental impacts of waste associated with our airport waste contract. The strategy also sets out BAA’s key goals for 2010 and 2020 which are:

By 2010:

  • At least 40% +  of BAA contract waste to be recycled/composted
  • Zero growth in contract waste produced per passenger
  • 100% compliance with duty of care and hazardous/special waste regulations
  • 90% of construction waste to be recycled/composted.
By 2020:
  • Zero waste to landfill
  • 70% of BAA contract waste to be recycled/composted
  • A reduction in BAA contract waste per passenger
  • 100% compliance with duty of care and hazardous/special waste regulations
  • 85% of construction waste to be recycled/composted.

Target 2008

To increase recycling for the general waste handled by the airport waste contract from 37.35% in 2007 to 38% and beyond  by 31 December 2008.

Opportunities for us to improve our recycling performance will come primarily by working with our new waste contractor in exploring recycling opportunites across all five terminals.
