Management framework
Sustainable development management system
Our sustainable development management system (SDMS) ensures that we are working towards meeting BAA’s corporate responsibility policy through improvements in our environmental management, social responsibility and economic development performance.
This year we commissioned independent consultants, WSP Environmental Ltd., to undertake a review of the effectiveness of the management system. This review involved a series of interviews with internal and external stakeholders, a documentation review and a tour of local Heathrow area.
The review showed that the SDMS has had considerable success in some areas (for example, implementing the economic development and regeneration strategy). There remains a number of challenges faced by BAA Heathrow in delivering the commitments made in the policy through the management system and embedding sustainability into core business processes.
Our focus for 2006/07 therefore is to take forward the recommendations from the review, and integrate the management system with core business processes. This will also involve integration with the Heathrow health and safety management system.
Training and incentive schemes
We have continued to develop our in house courses on key environment issues including Environmental Incident Management. We have also delivered a number of existing courses on Compliance, Waste Awareness, Energy and Climate Change and Environmental Permits Licenses and Consents. The feedback that we collect on these courses from delegates has been used to regualrly up date them and to inform new courses that are being developed.
For senior managers we have successfully piloted a series if debating events which have addressed CR issues facing BAA such as the growth of aviation and climate change. BAA managers have been encouraged to take part in the debate headed by a panel of industry experts.
In 06/07 we will be developing a learning strategy for enviornment issues for the BAA group and looking in particlar at developing a set of technical environmental competencies for the airports. In addition we will address at how we can provide better development opportunities for our staff who work within the environment function.
