Climate change
Target 2005/06: Reduce site carbon dioxide emissions by 3% against business as usual forecast, through improvements in energy efficiency.
Our performance against target
The site carbon dioxide emissions were 4% less than the ‘business as usual’ forecast.
| CO2 | Tonnes of CO2 mitigated |
| Target | 280,901 |
| Actual | 268,756 |
Our objectives
- Provide the information and tools necessary for those who influence energy consumption
- Deliver a programme to change the behaviour of those people who influence energy consumption
- Deliver an investment strategy to retrofit energy efficient technology in a manner that delivers maximum CO2 benefit and an acceptable financial return
Our strategy 2005/06
We recognise that climate change is a significant issue and our committed to playing our role in addressing it.
BAA is one of the top industrial users in the UK.We are committed to reducing CO2 emissions from energy consumption to 15% by 2010 compared to 1990 levels. To help us achieve this, at Heathrow we have developed local programmes to influence behavioural change and investment in energy efficient technologies
Our performance
Investment
To improve the performance of air conditioning plant at the airport, we have invested in two new technologies - Ecomesh (see case study) and Blygold. Blygold is a protective coating which prevents corrosion and improves cleaning of the condensers at the airport. The coating improves can overall efficiency of the chiller by approximately 1%
To improve the efficiency of air conditioning we have purchased and installed a number of variable speed drives on the air handling plant which reduces the amount of energy needed to deliver conditioned air to working spaces. This has been combined with a number of low-cost initiatives to turn off air supplies in non-operational hours.
At our headquarters at Heathrow, we have installed a number of resource saving devices in the Heathrow Point Complex. These include:
- Autotimers on printers and photocopiers
- Passive Infra-Red control for lighting in meeting rooms
- Automated flush control devices in the toilets for water conservation
Behavioural Change
We have continued to develop our behavioural change programme for staff through our ‘It’s Your Choice’ awareness campaign.
The Climate Change and Energy Awareness Training Course has seen very successful with over 100 participants from June 2005 to March 2006. Feedback has been very positive.
Going forward
New target for 2006/07: Reduce site CO2 emissions by 6% against the business as usual forecast, through improvements in energy efficiency
