Security

Our objective

The security of passengers, staff and organisations operating at our airports is of paramount importance. Over a third of our staff work in security, undertaking access control and screening responsibilities, and we continue to invest in the training and development of this professional workforce, capable of delivering improving security and service standards.

Our strategy & performance
The Multi Agency Threat and Risk Assessment process, piloted by Heathrow during 2004/05 was put to the test following the July bombings in London. We have continued to work very closely with the Police to review potential threats at the airport and target the efforts of all the agencies involved in mitigating these risks

We are at the leading edge of research and development, looking to enhance the technical capabilities of our security systems to meet increasing demand and changing threats. This year the joint DfT/BAA trial to pilot screening equipment at passenger screening points in T4 has continued. Feedback from the trial has allowed the technology to be improved to meet the needs of our business and to improve our detection of prohibited items. We also worked with the DfT to trial a new screening technology on the Heathrow Express platforms at Paddington Station.

We have made changes to security procedures which will enhance security at Heathrow. This has inclued the removal of laptops from hand luggage which has meant that processing times at the airport can increase at times. The changes resulted in extra demand on both our facilities and staff.  We have recruited additional security staff to cope with the additional demand and expect that as passengers become more familiar with the new methods there should be an improvement in waiting times. Our website contains information for travellers to ensure their journey is as smooth as possible.

Going forward
We will continue to meet the high standards set by the Department for Transport on security checks while minimising inconvenience to passengers. We will also continue to invest in new technology to enhance the technical capabilities of our security systems to meet increasing demand and changing threats.
