The Year in Review
Our challenges
The biggest challenge this year has been responding to the Government’s proposals for expansion at Heathrow.
Blight Assistance Schemes - we published our two voluntary Blight Assistance schemes. These schemes are to help protect property prices in areas that need to be safeguarded for a third runway and to help those people that would be newly affected if a third runway was constructed.
Noise Assistance Schemes - To address the impacts of noise, we launched two noise assistance schemes. One to help assist people move to a quieter area and a second scheme to deliver noise insulation to community buildings. These schemes have gone beyond the requirements of the White Paper.
The launch of these schemes were supported by an extensive communications programme including public exhibitions and dedicated helpline set up for enquiries.
Project for the Sustainable Development of Heathrow - The White Paper supported a third runway at Heathrow only if strict air quality, noise and surface access standards can be met. We’ve been working very closely with the DfT to assess what the impacts of expanding Heathrow would be on these key issues. The results of this project will be subject to full public consultation in 2006/07 (more details can be found at www.dft.gov.uk)
Draft interim masterplan - In June we published our draft interim master plan setting out our medium and long term proposals for Heathrow’s future growth. This was subject to full public consultation and responses will be used to inform the final master plan.
Our success
Centre of Vocational Excellence status (CoVE) – We were very proud to be awarded CoVE status by the Skills and Learning Council in recognition of our track record for delivering apprenticeship schemes
Meet the Buyers -We held the 9th annual Heathrow Meet the Buyers in November which gives local companies the chance to sell their goods and services to major companies and public agencies based in and around Heathrow. This year almost 450 companies took part in the event.
I-Volunteer awards – The BAA Communities Trust, BAA’s own charity, awarded £21,000 to BAA Heathrow employees as part of the I-Volunteer Awards for support with their charities. These awards encourage volunteering among our staff, support personal development and help communities around our airport. Over 180 members of staff took part in employee volunteering in 2005/06.
Clean Vehicles Award -The Clean Vehicles Programme at Heathrow has been nominated for a European Award for the Environment, after already winning an equivalent award in the UK. The awards recognise organisations that make an outstanding contribution to sustainable development
T5 Safety and construction awards – BAA’s Terminal 5 construction project has continued to set the industry standard this year by winning five Health and Safety awards at a leading industry awards ceremony, and was short listed in a further four categories. This included Health and Safety organisation of the Year.
