A westerly preference is operated at Heathrow. This means that during periods of light easterly winds (up to 5kts), aircraft will often continue to land in a westerly direction making their final approach over London.

The westerly preference was introduced in the 1960s to reduce numbers of aircraft taking off in an easterly direction over London, ie over the most heavily populated side of the airport.
