Welcome to BAA Heathrow’s Corporate Responsibility Online Report for the 2005/06 financial year.
As Heathrow celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, no where is progress more apparent than at Heathrow, where the original tented village of 1946 is such a contrast to today’s thriving airport.
We understand that while the growth of Heathrow has created huge social and economic opportunities, it has also had substantial social and environmental impacts. This is why I believe corporate responsibility is integral to us running a sustainable – and successful - airport and is one of my personal priorities as the new Divisional Director of Heathrow.
The Government’s White Paper – The Future of Air Transport published two years ago has meant the spotlight continues to be on Heathrow. This year we launched our blight and noise assistance schemes, the results of extensive consultation with the local community. In June we also published our draft master plan for consultation which sets out potential plans for Heathrow in the longer and medium term.
As well as responding to the Government’s White Paper, we have continued to find innovative ways to minimise our impacts and invest in schemes to help local people benefit from the opportunities the airport has to offer. This report provides numerous examples of how we have done this over the past 12 months.
The development of Heathrow will continue to dominate the agenda in the year ahead. We are expecting a government consultation on maximising runway use at Heathrow. We will also need to talk to our stakeholders and consult with local communities about Heathrow East, our proposals for a new terminal to replace the older eastern part of the central terminal area.
We have a great opportunity to ensure Heathrow grows and maintains its number 1 ranking in the world, but we will only do so in a way that is both socially and environmentally responsible.
I hope you enjoy reading this online report. We welcome any comments you have.
Mick Temple
Divisional Director – BAA Heathrow
