Performance in brief
A range of targets were set for 2005/06 designed to improve performance in significant aspects of environmental management, including climate change (CO² emissions from energy consumption), Noise, Air Quality, Surface Transport, Waste and Water Quality. Our performance is summarised here, together with links to the relevant pages of our website.
Our performance
- Surface transport: The number of passengers using public transport increased this year from 31% to 32% as a result of our work to tackle surface transport issues.
- Waste: two targets were set: the first to increase the amount of waste recycled to 24%, and the second to reduce the rate of growth in waste compared to last year. The amount of waste recycled increased from 22% to 24%, while the rate of growth in waste was reduced by 12%.
- Water: Target met - we continued to implement activities to improve water quality management and to ensure compliance with surface and foul water discharge consents.
We were disappointed that we were not able to fully meet our targets in the following areas:
- Noise: Targets were set to improve performance in track-keeping by 10% and improve compliance continuous descent approach (CDA) procedures from an average of 89% to over 90% for night time arrivals. Performance did improve, however not to the extent we would have liked. Track-keeping improved by 2.5%, rather than the 10% we targeted, and continuous descent approach (CDA) compliance was lower than in 2004/05, falling from an average of 89% to 83%
- Air quality: Our efforts to achieve a step change in our airside vehicle fleet have not progressed as we would have liked, and the next stage of the clean vehicles programme has not yet been implemented due to problems with work planning and resource allocation. We are refocusing our efforts in the coming year, based on results from our air quality scenario testing work in developing the best way forward to reduce NO2 emissions.
- Climate Change/Energy Use: We achieved a reduction of 1%, falling short of our target of a 2% reduction on forecast business as usual carbon dioxide (CO²) emissions.
