Air quality
Target
To carry out automatic continuous monitoring between April 2005 and March 2006 and install a permanent air quality monitoring station at a location agreed with Uttlesford District Council by January 2006

Performance against target
We carried out continuous monitoring at a temporary monitoring station and plan to replace the existing equipment in 2006. We also installed a permanent air quality monitoring station at the end of the runway. The additional runway monitoring station not only provides evidence of air quality at the point of maximum aircraft emissions but, in combination with data from the existing off-airport monitoring station, will improve our ability to model air quality now and into the future.

Climate change

We achieved a figure of 42,429 tonnes, 430 tonnes less than the target, through implementing energy efficient technologies

Performance against target
We surpassed the target as 71 people gained employment at the airport after attending the course. The delivery of the airport skills training programme was extended to the employment and training projects last year.

Performance against target
Our target of no more than 2% of planes leaving the flight paths before they reach 4,000 ft on certain routes was not met this year. In 2005/06 we recorded a figure of 3.9% against a target of 2% and a performance in 2004/05 of 6.2%. Over the last year, we have seen an improvement of 2.3%. This target was not met because of continuing technical issues with a database supplier to some aircraft. We have done a lot of work to improve this performance but there is still more to do.

We comfortably met our target of no more than 1.5% of planes leaving the flight paths before they reach 3,000 ft on certain routes. This figure was 0.4%.

We have not met the target of no less than 95% of planes ‘on track’ on each individual route, although five of the six routes were within this target. Our most difficult route is the easterly Dover route which continues to be a challenge for pilots and aircraft to fly, because the route requires a 180 degree turn just after take off. We are working very closely with the operators that fly this route to help them improve their performance.

Surface Transport
Target
To increase the number of staff using public transport to travel to work, with a 10% increase in travelcard sales from April 2005 to the end of March 2006

Performance against target
Our site-based travel plan is designed to encourage employees who drive to work at the airport to switch to public transport or car-sharing and sales of our airport travelcard also continue to grow year on year.

Waste
Targets
An overall total of at least 22% of airport waste to be recycled between April 2005 and March 2006

Total waste generated between April 2005 and March 2006 not to exceed 5,800 tonnes, representing an equivalent of 0.26kg per passenger against expected passenger numbers

Performance against target
We actually recycled 25% versus our target of 22%, achieved largely through the local segregation of waste by the airport community and through an extensive waste training and education programme.

Our waste generated per passenger has remained constant at 0.23kg and we met the target, largely due to the fact that 89% of Stansted flights are operated by low-cost airlines which tend not to offer such in-flight services as hot meals and newspapers. This means that waste generated at Stansted by airline operations remains low by industry standards.

Water Quality
Target
For the airport’s water discharges to meet discharge limits in agreement with the Environment Agency

Performance against target
We failed to meet this target. In 2005/6 we improved our monitoring of the airport's drainage systems and from 53 samples against our consent conditions one sample was found to be higher than the consented level, with suspended solids measured at 30mg/l, compared to a consent of 20mg/l.
